What's in a name:
Halcyon — from the Greek words hals (the sea) and kuo (brood on).
According to Greek legend the kingfisher nested on the sea during the winter solstice. It was thought that the kingfisher had the power to make the sea calm and tranquil. These “Halcyon Days” are associated with carefree times of peace, happiness, and prosperity.
Construction: Building commenced in 1979 and she was officially launched in 1981 for the original owners R. & N. Hannon of NSW.
In 1983, Halcyon was sold to Doug Saul of Launceston (Tasmania), where she sailed out of the Port Dalrymple Yacht Club on the Tamar River. Most of her time was spent participating in local races and cruising the islands of Bass Strait.
Halcyon contested both the 1983 and 1984 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Races.
In 1983 she came 115 on handicap and 144 over the line (from a total of 175 starters).
In 1984, a fleet of 150 yachts started, but 104 retired in the face of 'strong to gale force' southerly winds that battered the fleet. Halcyon was one of the retirees.
In 1992, Halcyon was a part of the first "Van Diemen's Land Circumnavigation Cruise" held by the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania to celebrate 350 years since Abel Tasman circumnavigated Tasmania in 1642. This event is now held every 2 years, covering approximately 800 nautical miles.
In 2010, Tim sold Halcyon (through Boat Sales Tasmania) to her current owners Chris and Sally Calvert, and her home was in Lindisfarne Bay.
In December 2014, Chris and Sally relocated Halycon to a mooring at Kettering (Little Oyster Cove).
This is to allow them to spend more time cruising the southern end of Bruny Island including Dover to Recherche Bay.
In April 2016, Chris & Sally sold Halcyon to T. & S. Ryan.
We had a wonderful 6 years with her and hope the new owners will enjoy her as much as we did. Bonn Voyage!
Halcyon has since been sold by T. & S. Ryan
